The Face of JP : exhibit opening & community get-together

You are invited to attend the Face of JP exhibit opening & community get-together, which will take place on Sunday June 8, from 3-5pm. The event will be a unique opportunity to view the documentary exhibit, meet the participants in person, as well as a chance to get to know some of your neighbors.

We are excited to announce that a preview of “The Face of Jamaica Plain” will be shown at the JPNDC’s “Building an Equitable Community” Neighborhood Summit, planned for MAY 17 at English High School.

Join the JPNDC, your friends and neighbors, and more than 20 local co-sponsors at the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Summit on Saturday, May 17 at English High School. The summit offers an opportunity for local residents from different backgrounds to come together and talk about how to improve our community while learning from each other and from the “experts.”

The day begins with a keynote address by Rubén Lizardo, Associate Director of PolicyLink, a national research and action institute based in Oakland, California that promotes economic and social equity. Lazardo’s comments, Communities Making Choices: Sustaining Democracy, Lifting Up What Works will set the stage for the day’s discussion, putting recent developments in Jamaica Plain in the context of social justice issues confronting urban communities.

Follow-up panels will examine issues of affordable housing, civic engagement and economic opportunity in greater detail. Afternoon workshops will promote discussion and skill-sharing on subjects ranging from smart growth to CORI reform, working across race and class to improve our schools to keeping our business districts vibrant and diverse.

In addition to Mr. Lizardo, other speakers include Gené Moreno of the Chicago Rehab Network; Roxan McKinnon of City Life/Vida Urbana; Holly Sklar, Business for Shared Prosperity and Let Justice Roll Living Wage Campaign; and David Warner, co-owner of City Feed and Supply, a small business in Jamaica Plain.

All too often, revitalization turns urban neighborhoods into exclusive upscale enclaves. We believe that the JP Neighborhood Summit will raise important questions about how Jamaica Plain can be different.
